Talking to a friend of mine and a cousin I found out that there are several points that affect the teaching learning process at Centro Escolar INSA, at least in the area of "bachillerato general" where they both study. They say that something that makes them feel bored easily is that they don't have enough free time because they have to stay sitting down three classes in a row and they just have ten minutes of break , after that they have two more classes and another ten minutes break, so in the end they just rest twenty minutes, making the students annoyed and causing most of them either to avoid classes or to give a hard time to the teachers and the other classmates.
Another crucial point is that there is an abuse of authority from the eighty percent of the teachers. It's true that students are not angels, but they still have rights and dignity. My cousin told me the case of this student who didn't deliver like three or four homework assignments in a row and instead of looking for the way to talk to this student and try to find a solution to the lack of responsabiity, the teacher humilliated him in front of all the classmates telling him that he was useless and that he should drop out. Cases like this occur everyday and some students feel so offended that they decide to obey their teachers and drop out of school.
I ask both of my interviewees if they had ever seen a person of the ministry of education and they say they haven't. They haven't even seen anyone checking how the work is done there. I can infer that this is one of the causes of all these problems because teachers feel free to do whatever they want. It's true that we have the famous "LEPINA" as a new law to protect kids and teenagers, but most of the students in the public schools don't know their rights; on the other hand, as a teacher of a private area, I can assure that most of the students in the private schools know them; therefore, they are more concious of how they should be treated and what to ask from their teachers.
As a conclusion I would like to calrify that I don't balme teachers for all these points, I blame the society that has raised lazy people, people who don't like to read, people who don't work for vocation, people who don't care for other's feelings, people who don't like to fight for their rights, and people who respond causing more damage to the ones that damage them. We still have a lot to change in our society and I think that one of the first steps in favor of education could be that representatives go to the public schools and tell students about their rights and maybe train teachers to work with this new generation that could either make our society better or ruin it.
First of all Julio, I want to congratulate you for the objectivity of your analysis. What you have wrote about is something that impacts negativily on the education of our youth.
ReplyDeleteThank you Boteo, I thnk we got to do something about it
ReplyDeleteThank you eduard! And You are right, people normally see this as a common thing, but we are dealing with a huge problem since Ss' steem is being damaged and that psychologicaly speaking something grave
ReplyDeleteHave you realized how stressful teachers are in this high school? Most of that behavior is so much connected to the way of channeling stress. There is a chain of stress and nobody gives a try to break it. The schedules are awful as a result the classes become such a headache. Here it is where the methodology must be switched for the teaching and learning process is being tremendously harmed
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad that teachers are acting in a different role than being teaching or guiding the students in order to learn. I agree with your comment because I have a relative who is studying there, so told those sad things that are happening in this Institution. The other thing that you said is that students feel bored in their classes and the time for breakfast is too short. I consider that teacher must teach in interactive way or classes must be dynamic. So students will not get bored.
ReplyDeleteJulio i really like this article, i can see how analytical person you are regarded to this problems, but you know it is our sad reality.
ReplyDeleteThanks Angelica and you are right teacher and connie these problems are very connected to stress and indiference, they see that things are not going well but they barely do something to improve. Here is where also vocation plays an important role because if you are in love with what you do you will have fun doing it and you will look for the ways to make it better.
